Details
Nova Gorica is located on the west of the country, in the proximity of the Italian border. Nova Gorica is a young town, which develop after the Second World War, since the town of Gorica, the then centre of the north Primorska region, remained on the Italian side of the border. Upon the Slovenia’s integration into the EU both towns were reunited. Right on the border a new Square was built, with a mosaic of the new Europe as a symbol of European integration and abolishment of borders.
On the north Nova Gorica is surrounded by peaks of Sabotin, Skalnica or Sveta Gora and Škabrijel, on the south and southwest there are the hills of Panovec and Kostanjevica, and on the west there is the Soča river with plains.
The town offers many interesting sights and attractions. You can visit a Franciscan Monastery Kostanjevica with well supplied library, and Tomb of the Burbon family, or go on a pilgrimage to Sveta Gora where you can see the Basilica. The Renaissance castle Kromberk is a home of the local museum Goriški muzej with its permanent collection.
There are plenty of opportunities for sport activities and recreation in the town and in its vicinity – swimming pools, tennis courts, kayaking, horse centre, paragliding and hang-gliding, many bicycling routs and pathways.
Besides many associations and organizations the town is also the home of various important institutions, like Cultural Home, Slovenian National Theatre and the library Goriška knjižnica of Franc Bevk, which is one of the largest libraries in Slovenia.
Nova Gorica is the Slovenian largest gambling centre, and one of the most important entertaining destinations in Europe. Luxurious casinos offer entertainment, great cuisine, and rich programme to several thousands of visitors every night throughout the year.
The surroundings of Nova Gorica with diverse landscape from the lower Vipava Valley to Trnovsko-Banjška plain offers interesting excursion points, natural attractions and rich cultural heritage.
