Kanal

Details

Location: Kanal

The Kanal ob Soči Community includes a part of the Soča Valley, the area around the Kanalski Kolovrat and the western part of the Banjška planota plateau.

The two largest towns are Kanal and Deskle, the rest of the settlements are villages, hamlets and scattered individual homesteads. Kanal is the administrative centre of the community. It is situated on the banks of the Soča river, linked with a bridge. The medieval town is a treasury of the cultural heritage. On the central square you will find the Church of the Assumption of Mary from the 15th century, a Neptun’s fountain from 1815, the monument of Valentin Stanič (a priest, alpine climber and the founder of the institute for the deaf and dumb in Gorica) and a monument of the composer Marij Kogoj. The centre of the old part of the town is a square Kontrada and the gallery, named after the painter and graphic artist Riko Debenjak.

Very interesting is also a Gothic house with the memorial room of the composer Marij Kogoj, and Josip Kocijančič library, as well as the Petrucka with the only preserved original fireplace in Kanal.

By the main road towards Tolmin is the ossuary and memorial dedicated to the victims of the WW II.
